Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung - An Interdisciplinary Laboratory

Twenty-five different research disciplines drawn from the fields of the natural sciences, the humanities and design work side-by-side at the interdisciplinary laboratory known as Image Knowledge Gestaltung. The combination of these disciplines creates an interplay of ideas that enables and encourages new perspectives on the most engaging objects and developments of our era. In turn, this approach allows the laboratory to establish a link with scientific research – a link that was formerly impossible due to fixed, discipline-oriented boundaries and inflexible barriers between institutes and faculties. The goal of our Cluster of Excellence is to unearth and explore possible synergies, realise their potential and sustain these gains in knowledge with the help of exceptional design. In this sense, it is essential that our research process undergoes continuous self-monitoring and evaluation, which, in turn, generates the further added value of this flagship project.

The Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung works on the assumption that science is also design. In fact, scientific research no longer serves to merely analyse nature, it also helps to shape it. And indeed, knowledge gained from historical research undertaken in the humanities is equally as essential to shaping the future as knowledge gained from science. By shaping this knowledge through design, our interdisciplinary laboratory performs a bridge-building function between the theoretical knowledge gathered at universities and its practical, everyday application. As a result, theory and research are further strengthened and better integrated into a concrete awareness, for example, of social problems and issues relating to mobility, health and the environment.

"The Anthropocene Kitchen", a base project of the interdisciplinary laboratory, operates precisely within this range of issues. The project examines the kitchen as an important site of the exchange of energy in the "Anthropocene" era – a new geological epoch, the age of man. Our goal here is to investigate the kitchen as an energy-intense and resource intense location and as the end-station of a global chain of production and logistics; in each of our kitchens, the Anthropocene takes shape in ways that are influenced by local and day-to-day factors. Our approach focuses primarily on two levels of observation and scale: on the one hand, we look at the cooking and eating of food, and on the other hand, we study the balancing of resources, energy and material flows. Indeed, the design of our everyday lives calls forth the global chains set into motion by individual behaviour as well as the re-localisation of common outsourcing practices.

We chose the comic book format as our design medium because it provides the opportunity to combine words and images we were looking for in our effort to depict complex relationships in a vivid and appealing manner, yet without too much need for simplification. The use of narratives and personalised stories also holds the potential to stimulate new ways of thinking among readers, while also managing to convey factual knowledge at different levels of perception. This approach is explicitly reflected in the cultural and artistic diversity of the comic book, which features the work of twelve international illustrators. In turn, this creates a second interpretive level that allows us to communicate beyond words alone.

The work of a total of ten experts active in the fields of geology, biology, geoecology, architecture, design and geoinformatics forms the heart of the "Anthropocene Kitchen" project. These professionals seek to address persistent historical questions and generate concrete solutions for the future of our global food supply. We look at kitchens from different perspectives, which range from design and urban planning all the way to global resource flows and individual footprints. Exzellenzcluster Bild Wissen Gestaltung - Ein interdisziplinäres Labor

Im interdisziplinären Labor Bild Wissen Gestaltung arbeiten 25 verschiedene Forschungsdisziplinen aus den Bereichen Natur- und Geisteswissenschaft sowie dem Gestaltungsbereich zusammen. Aus dieser Kombination an Disziplinen ergeben sich Verschränkungen, die neue Perspektiven auf Objekte und Prozesse unserer Zeit ermöglichen. Auf diese Weise schafft das Labor einen Zusammenhang wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens, der zuvor durch feste disziplinäre Abgrenzungen und institutionelle Schranken nicht möglich war, denn bislang existieren eher disziplinär organisierte Institute und Fakultäten. Ziel des Exzellenzclusters ist es, mögliche Synergien zu entdecken und deren Potenzial abzurufen sowie Wissensgewinne mithilfe der Gestaltungsdisziplinen zu verstetigen. Hierbei ist es für den Forschungsprozess vonnöten, dass eine stetige Selbst-Beobachtung und Evaluation stattfindet, wodurch ein weiterer Mehrwert dieses Leuchtturm-Projektes generiert wird.

Der Cluster geht davon aus, dass Wissenschaft auch Gestaltung ist. Naturwissenschaftliche Forschung analysiert nicht mehr nur die Natur, sondern gestaltet sie auch mit. Erkenntnisse aus den Geisteswissenschaften, die auf historischer Forschung beruhen, sind ebenso unerlässlich für die Gestaltung der Zukunft. Durch die Gestaltung dieses Wissens übernimmt das interdisziplinäre Labor eine Brückenfunktion zwischen dem theoretischen Wissen der Universität und der praktischen Anwendung: Theorien und Grundlagenforschung werden auf diese Weise gestärkt und zugleich Bestandteil eines konkreten Bewusstseins für z. B. soziale Probleme, Fragen von Mobilität, Gesundheit und Umwelt.

In diesem Themenkomplex bewegt sich das Basisprojekt „Die Anthropozän-Küche” als ein Teil des interdisziplinären Labors. Hier untersuchen wir die Küche als folgenreichen Ort des Energieaustausches im Zeitalter des „Anthropozän” - einem neuen geologischen Zeitalter, dem Zeitalter des Menschen. Unser Ziel ist es, die Küche als einen der energie- und ressourcenintensivsten Orte, als Endstation einer globalen Produktionskette und Logistik zu untersuchen, in dem das Anthropozän in auch sehr lokal geprägten Alltagspraktiken Gestalt annimmt. Dabei werden zwei Betrachtungsund Maßstabsebenen verknüpft: einerseits des Kochens und Essens; andererseits der Bilanzierung von Ressourcen, Energie- und Stoffflüssen. Denn die Gestaltung des Alltagslebens erfordert die Vergegenwärtigung der globalen Wirkungsketten des individuellen Handelns wie auch die Relokalisierung von bisherigen Praktiken des Outsourcens.

Als Gestaltungsmedium wählten wir das Format des Comics, da die Kombinationsmöglichkeit von Wort und Bild das von uns benötigte Potenzial hat, komplexe Zusammenhänge anschaulich und ansprechend darzustellen, ohne zu sehr simplifizieren zu müssen. Die Verwendung von Narrativen und Personalisierungen kann bei den Leserinnen und Lesern neuartige Denkprozesse anstoßen und schafft es, Faktenwissen auf unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmungsebenen zu vermitteln. Dies manifestiert sich insbesondere in der kulturellen und künstlerischen Diversität des Comics, der von zwölf internationalen Zeichner_innen umgesetzt wurde. Hierdurch entwickelt sich eine zweite Bedeutungsebene, die allein in Worten nicht zu transportieren gewesen wäre.

Am Basisprojekt „Die Anthropozän-Küche“ arbeiten insgesamt zehn Expert_innen aus der Geologie, Biologie, Geoökologie, Architektur, Design und Geoinformatik an der Transformation historisch gewachsener Fragen hin zu Lösungsansätzen für die Zukunft der globalen Ernährung. Dabei wird die Küche unter verschiedenen Blickwinkeln betrachtet: vom Design über Stadtplanung, hin zu globalen Ressourcenflüssen und dem individuellen Fußabdruck sowie Fragen der Ethik und kulturellen Vorlieben. All diese Facetten finden in diesem Wissenscomic ihren Ausdruck.
